Cosmetic Dentistry Frequently Asked Questions

What is a porcelain veneer?
Porcelain veneers are thin facades of porcelain applied to the surface of teeth to give you an entirely new contour. Veneers give a beautiful "smile lift" to unattractive or malpositioned teeth, offering you the most winning smile. With proper maintenance, including brushing, flossing and regular professional care, veneers will last for many years.

What is involved in the procedure?
On natural teeth with good alignment, about 1/2 mm of the front surface of the tooth and about 1mm of the biting edge of the tooth is removed. The natural tooth structure is then chemically prepared. Bonding agents and composite resins are used to attach the porcelain veneers. The procedure usually takes two appointments, 2 1/2 - 3 weeks apart. Each appointment usually lasts approximately 2 - 2 1/2 hours.

How do veneers stay on my teeth?
The natural tooth structure is chemically prepared. Bonding agents and composite resins are used to attach the porcelain veneers to the teeth. Once they are chemically bonded to your own tooth structure, they are extremely strong and durable.

Is there a black line at the top of each veneer?
NO. "Black lines" sometimes show around some old and ill fitted crowns. Porcelain veneers don't contain any metal, so black lines will never be a problem.

What do veneers look like?
Veneers will look like the beautiful, natural teeth that you've always wanted. I will work with you in advance to customize the best shade for you.

How do crowns preserve natural teeth?
After the removal of old filling material and decay, the crown is applied to protect the remaining natural tooth structure. Crowns are made of tooth colored porcelain which looks and feels like natural teeth.

What is the difference between a cap, a crown and a jacket?
These terms are generally interchangeable.

Will metal be visible?

No. If missing teeth are replaced, it may be necessary to show some metal on the tongue side of the teeth. This can only be seen by looking inside your mouth, not when you're smiling or talking.

Will either of the procedures be painful?
Absolutely not ! All procedures are performed with local anesthesia. We want you to feel as comfortable as possible.

Should I have my teeth cleaned before the procedure?
Yes. The whitening medium will not penetrate a bacterial plaque film. Regular brushing and flossing during the procedure is a must, as well.
